Almost my entire life, I have loved the idea of travelling and exploring the world, and I am sure many of you can relate. But I can pretty much guarantee that some of you reading this are asking the question, "Why should I bother to travel?" You are probably thinking about the costs, the hassle of packing and then getting to your destination. To me, though, I think that is just a few of the tings that make travelling so fun. The fact that it is something you have to work to save up for the trip makes it all the more enjoyable, I think. And you know what they always say: "It's not about the destination, it's about the journey". (However, I think the destination is pretty important, too). For the past few days, I have been doing some research to see what others say on travelling, and there are a lot of people who gave some pretty convincing arguments as to why everyone should travel. But before I go too much into that, check out this video from BuzzFeed that shares some cool facts that will hopefully inspire to start planning a future trip. [youtube url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEfPzNS3Shg&feature=share"] I am just itching to hop on a plane and go anywhere now after watching that...maybe Australia? If that doesn't get you in the mood to go explore this world like it does for me, take a look at some of the reasons why people say you should take some time to travel in your life. 1. Travelling challenges you. It challenges you to work hard and put in effort to save up enough money for a trip It will allow you to enjoy it even more because you know what it took to get there. It also challenges you to step outside of your comfort zone. Whether it is trying new foods, meeting new people, or doing something in a totally new way, travelling will sometimes put you in certain positions that may be a little uncomfortable. However, I think if you do decide to push yourself at those times, you will be either proud of yourself for trying it or have an absolute blast doing it. Newgrange passage tomb in Ireland. 2. Travelling makes you learn new things. Whether you decide to travel for educational purposes or not, you will definitely learn tons of new tidbits of information while you are exploring. It could be that the proper greeting in Japan is to bow when you meet someone, or that the Newgrange monument in Ireland is one of the oldest in the world. Now, yes, you could just search information like this on the internet, but it is so much more beneficial if you get the opportunity to physically experience what you are learning. So wherever you end up travelling to, you will return home at least a little bit smarter than when you left. (Maybe we next time we are learning about, say, the Renaissance in history class we should just take a short trip to Italy. Anyone with me?) 3. Travel allows you to find yourself. I think that this is one of the biggest reasons why recent graduates decide to take a year off and travel after college. Travelling gives you the opportunity to learn a lot about yourself. What your true passion is, where you want to live in the future, or it could even be a simple as what your new favorite food is. I know whenever I travel some place new, I find out something about myself that I didn't know when I left home. This past weekend, I rowed in my last regatta for the fall season in Augusta, Georgia. On Friday, I had decided in my mind that I really didn't want to row after high school. But after I finished my last race on Saturday, I started to realize that rowing is a passion of mine, and I don't want to stop in college. This is just a small-scale example, but travelling could allow you to discover something about yourself that would change your life forever. These are just three of the reasons why you should travel, and I hope that after reading this I have sparked something in you that at least gets you interested in visiting someplace new.
